What is the meaning of Wall Street?

Wall Street is the beating heart of the global financial sector, located in the Financial District of lower Manhattan, New York City. The street runs roughly from Broadway to South Street and is approximately eight blocks long.

Wall Street serves as a symbol for the American financial world and houses the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). This is where the supply and demand for stocks and bonds come together, allowing companies to raise capital and investors to make a profit. In short, it is the physical and figurative place where the global capital market is directed.

Why is it called Wall Street?

There are two explanations for where the term Wall Street originates.

1. The name dates back to the 17th century, when New York was still the Dutch settlement of New Amsterdam. The Dutch built a wooden defensive wall to protect themselves from attacks.
   
   
2. According to the other explanation, historical maps refer to the ‘Waal Straat’, named after the thirty Walloon families from the primarily French-speaking region who helped found Manhattan. The name may specifically honour Peter Minuit, the Walloon governor who purchased the island.
